How to Restore Individual Files and Folders

If you have not yet installed Carbonite on your computer we recommend that you install it now.


Apple Menu: System Preferences
Click the Apple symbol in the menu bar and select System Preferences to open the System Preferences window.

System Preferences Window Within the System Preferences window click on the Carbonite icon.


You will see the Carbonite Preference pane displayed.


Carbonite Preference Pane: Backup Is
Within the Carbonite Preference pane click on the drop-down box for the Backup Is: field and select in Recover Mode.

Carbonite Preference Pane: Recover Mode Pop-Up Click Proceed to put Carbonite in Recover Mode.


While in Recover Mode your backup is frozen in place and you are given time to restore your files.


Carbonite Preference Pane: Restore Tab
Click the Restore button in the Carbonite Preference pane.

You will see the Restore page displayed. Here you can restore individual files or open the Restore Assistant.

Carbonite Preference Pane: Restore Tab Browse to the item(s) you wish to restore by clicking on the folders in the window.
 
Then click Restore Selected Item(s) to start restoring your selection.

If you want to change the restore location of the file, you can do so with the options listed here.

  • Restore Assistant - this opens up the Restore Assistant and guides you through a step-by-step process to restore all of your backed up files.
  • Get Info... - Opens a new window and gives you details about the file.
Restore Tab: Restore Location Restore files to: - This drop-down box lets you choose the location to restore your selected item(s).
  • Original Location on Disk - Restores the selected item(s) to where they were originally backed up from.
  • Desktop Folder - Creates a folder on the desktop entitled Carbonite Restored Files, and restores the selected item(s) there.
  • Other Location... - Lets you browse to a location where you wish to restore the selected item(s).


If you select to restore to the desktop or to the original location you may receive a pop-up (shown below) from the Carbonite Preference pane. This pop-up states that restoring to that location may overwrite the files listed there and gives a list of restore locations.

Click the button on the right to restore the file to the specified location.

If you wish to choose a different location to restore, you can click one of the other buttons.


Now just sit back and relax while your files are restored to your computer.
